Long Description
With their graceful stance, brilliant colors, and intricate markings, members of the North American genus Calochortus are among the most dazzling bulbous plants in the world. Ranging from southern Canada as far south as Mexico and Guatemala, Calochortus includes four distinct groups: fairy lanterns, cat's ears, star tulips, and the spectacular mariposa lilies. Discussions of the species contain a history and description of the plant, along with its distribution and habitat and observations about its cultivation. Among the book's most compelling features are Ron Parsons' superb photographs, most taken in situ, which vividly illustrate the remarkable variation to be found within the genus (and sometimes even within individual species). With many species rare or endangered, it is imperative that we become better acquainted with this genus of exquisite plants.
