Workman Publishing Submission Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in Workman Publishing. We are an independent publishing company that publishes adult and children's books as well as calendars. We look for strong writing, an original approach, and intelligence in concept and execution. We do not publish fiction, poetry, memoir, or narrative non-fiction. Please review this site to learn more about our current list and the type of books and calendars we typically publish.
When submitting work to us, please send as much of the proposed book or calendar as possible. If the work is partially completed, send what you can with an outline detailing the structure of the remaining part of the project. If the project contains or consists primarily of artwork, please send photocopies or another type of reproduction. We will contact you if we need to see the originals.
If you'd like more information on what goes into a great book proposal, click here for a free sample from Workman's The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, by Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry. For children's book submissions, please note that we do not publish picture books or middle grade and young adult fiction. Send your submissions to the attention of the Children's Department.
We prefer electronic submissions, which may be sent to submissions@workman.com in the form of a Word document or a PDF. You may also send hard-copy submissions to the attention of the Editorial Department at:
Workman Publishing Company
225 Varick Street
New York, NY 10014-4381
If you choose to mail your submission to us, the proposal or manuscript must be typed. Please be sure that your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address are on the manuscript and that your name is on the back of each piece of art. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope in the correct size for the return of your work. Those submissions not containing a SASE will not be returned. We do not accept faxed submissions, or those on disks.
Each manuscript we receive is individually reviewed, usually by two or more editors. Due to the enormous volume of submissions, the consideration may take up to several months.
Algonquin Books Submission GuidelinesAlgonquin Books publishes literary fiction and nonfiction. We don’t publish poetry or genre fiction (romance, science fiction, etc.). In late 2013 Algonquin Books for Young Readers will begin publishing literary fiction and a limited number of narrative non-fiction titles for middle grade and young adult readers. See at bottom for submissions info.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept unsolicited manuscripts or any electronic submissions. We do accept queries and will contact you if we would like to see the full manuscript. Please note that we cannot take calls regarding the status of your submission.
If you would like to submit a query, please send a short (no more than 15-20 double-spaced pages) sample of your work; a cover letter; SASE or, if you would like your manuscript returned, a self-addressed envelope and a check to cover return postage to:
