Addiction expert and author of The Recovery Book

Addictive illness is a major health problem around the world, killing a person less than every nine seconds. Al Mooney, M.D. is an internationally recognized expert in the field of addiction and recovery, a pioneer of recovery activism, one of the first U.S. physicians to be certified in addiction medicine, and an Inaugural Diplomat in the American Board of Addiction Medicine. THE RECOVERY BOOK, his “bible of recovery” for the 23 million Americans and their families who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, has sold almost 350,000 copies and is now available in a completely revised and updated second edition.

The new edition covers the latest issues in addiction science, including neuroplasticity, which sheds new light on how addiction affects brain function, and how people in recovery can use their thoughts and actions to help heal the brain. It covers the latest treatments for addiction to prescription drugs, now more pernicious than illegal drugs.

The book, which also includes information for teens and young adults, is newly organized into the Recovery Zone System, a three-stage blueprint for moving at one’s own pace from the first steps in committing to recovery; to rebuilding your life, health and relationships; and finally to living a purposeful and fulfilled life in recovery. A new relapse prevention tool, the Recovery Zone ReCheck, helps people at any stage of recovery to avoid a relapse.

Dr. Mooney has a deeply personal interest in addiction recovery since both of his parents entered into recovery when he was a teenager (and his father, a physician, spent six months in prison as a result of drug use). Afterward his parents founded an addiction treatment center, Willingway Hospital in Statesboro, GA, where Dr. Mooney became CEO for many years and is currently Director of Addiction Medicine and Recovery, a board position that enables him to speak as a recovery activist all over the world.

Dr. Mooney is currently involved in establishing recovery programs and awareness in Egypt, Bosnia, and Ghana, and also worked with Georgia Southern University to establish one of the first recovery campuses. He also currently serves as medical director for The Healing Place of Wake County, NC, a homeless shelter that features a peer-driven residential recovery program.
