Amy Stewart

Bestselling Author of Wicked Plants and The Drunken Botanist

Amy Stewart maintains her standing as a highly sought-after speaker with her new book, The Drunken Botanist, which explores the dizzying array of plants that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol.  It’s the compelling mixture of history, science, literature and humor that Stewart is known for, and this time she can combine talks with cocktail parties, tastings or demonstrations.  The book contains more than 50 drink recipes and growing tips for gardeners.  The New York Times has written, “Amy Stewart has a way of making gardening exciting…(she) is once again out to show the sexier side of the garden.”

Stewart is the author of five other books on the perils and pleasures of nature, which together have over 250,000 copies in print.  She has seen the dark side of the natural world and tells all in her witty and celebrated bestsellers, Wicked Plants and Wicked Bugs.  She grew up in Arlington, Texas, and started gardening when she moved to Santa Cruz, California, after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. That inspired her first book, From the Ground Up: The Story of a First Garden, which was chosen for the Barnes & Noble Discover program. The Earth Moved: On the Remarkable Achievements of Earthworms won the California Horticultural Society's Writer's Award, and Flower Confidential: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful, a behind-the-scenes look at the flower industry, was her first New York Times bestseller.

Stewart's storytelling powers have won her interviews on literally hundreds of national and regional TV and radio shows, including CBS Sunday Morning, Good Morning America, and NPR's Morning Edition and Fresh Air. She has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, and every national garden magazine, including Fine Gardening, where she is a contributing editor. She has spoken at literary and library events, colleges, and gardening events nationwide and has even told a spellbound group of mystery writers how to commit the perfect murder—with plants and insects, naturally.  Amy Stewart lives with her husband in Eureka, California, where they own an antiquarian bookstore called Eureka Books.
