Jordan Matter

Bestselling Author of DANCERS AMONG US

“Leap and the net will appear,” a Zen saying, is Jordan Matter’s motto.  Internationally celebrated photographer of the unexpected, he has found his collaborators in dancers, first in the bestselling DANCERS AMONG US, and more recently in the critically acclaimed DANCERS AFTER DARK.  “In Jordan Matter’s photos, dancers make all the world their stage,” wrote The New York Times, and Diane Sawyer praised, “breathtaking photos to free your imagination!”   Some of the most extraordinary poses you’ll ever see are captured in these two books, and the stories behind them are even more remarkable.

DANCERS AMONG US is a joyful exploration of dancers leaping, spinning, lifting and kicking in the midst of daily life.  In DANCERS AFTER DARK, Matter took his dancers into the night and photographed them posing nude throughout Europe and North America, often in the midst of busy city life. He includes behind-the-scenes chapters highlighting some of the most jaw-dropping stories.  He is drawn to three potential elements in his photographs: a “wow” factor, a sense of humor, and a seemingly dangerous scenario that highlights the dancer’s physical risk.  In both books, no trampolines or wires were used, and the astonishing photographs have not been digitally enhanced or altered.

As a speaker Matter has infectious energy and wit, and he uses his experiences as a photographer to illustrate a grander concept.  He has made a career out of relying on the unknown to provide inspiration: “I can teach anyone how to learn to be lucky,” he says.  He has spoken to a wide variety of organizations, including ESPN, the National Arts Club, the School of Visual Arts, Middlesex College as a keynote speaker, and has been an Arts Envoy through the State Department on a speaking tour of South Korea sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. He and his work have been featured in all media, including ABC World News Tonight, Today, the BBC, The New York Times, NPR, and O, The Oprah Magazine and in exhibitions all over the world.

Matter is the grandson of renowned photographer Herbert Matter and painter Mercedes Matter, and the son of filmmaker Alex Matter and Ford model Paula Feiten.  He began his career as a baseball player, but was lured into photography after seeing a Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibit.  He lives with his wife and two children—his inspiration—in New York City.
