Author of Steven Petrow's Complete Gay & Lesbian Manners

STEVEN PETROW’S COMPLETE GAY & LESBIAN MANNERS is the definitive guide to LGBT life in our changing society, whether you’re gay and dealing with rapidly evolving issues such as same-sex marriage or anti-gay bullying, or straight and interacting with LGBT family members, friends, or co-workers. Petrow, dubbed “Mister Manners” by The Advocate, is the go-to authority on the subject. He is former President of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association; a nationally syndicated columnist on LGBT manners for The Huffington Post, Yahoo, Shine, and, and was the first curator of The New York Times’ same-sex wedding blog. Most recently, he is writing about manners and mores in the digital age.

Time Magazine wrote, “Move over, Emily Post! When it comes to etiquette for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community—as well as their straight friends, family members and co-workers—Steven Petrow is the authority.” His COMPLETE GAY & LESBIAN MANNERS has nothing to do with forks or monograms. “[It] takes a larger point of view,” says Petrow. “I argue that treating everyone with respect and decency makes for a better and fairer world…. helping people live with greater confidence and self-esteem and documenting the rites and rituals of our commitment to and love for each other.” The book was named to the Over the Rainbow List of best books for [[LGBT]] readers and nominated for a Lambda Literary Award.

An award-winning journalist and bestselling author, Petrow started his career at The Wall Street Journal, and has since held senior editorial positions at Life Magazine, HotWired (Wired Magazine), Longevity Magazine, and Everyday Health. He has also written for Salon, the Daily Beast, the Los Angeles Times, and dozens of other media outlets.

Petrow’s previous books include The Lost Hamptons; The Essential Book of Gay Manners and Etiquette; The HIV Drug Book; When Someone You Know Has AIDS; and Dancing Against the Darkness. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institution, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center. Petrow appears regularly on national television and radio and online, including CNN, Today, NPR, PBS, and Sirius radio, among others.

He has spoken to gay, straight, and mixed audiences across the country, among them Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, the Stanford University Publishing Course, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
